A rollercoaster ride through the life and work of the stubborn jazz genius Thelonious Monk

Thelonious Monk is one of the quirkiest icons in jazz history. Once dismissed as too unorthodox, his angular melodies made him stand out among his peers. Onstage, he would get up from the piano and dance to the solos of his bandmates for a few moments. Combining his musical inventiveness, dramatic playing style and distinctive looks (it is impossible to keep track of all the hats he has worn), there is no one else like Thelonious.

Zonzo Compagnie from Belgium knows the craft of telling the stories of musical giants to children. In this multimedia show, Thelonious’ surprising harmonies and exciting rhythms will be performed live by jazz trio De Beren Gieren. A stunning video backdrop with animations and footage of Thelonious’ live performances will transport you to the unique musical world of the genius. The improvisational and relaxed spirit of jazz is a delight guaranteed to audiences of all ages and has the whole family popping along. It’s sure to be a crazy ride!

King of dissonance

Thelonious was one of the favourite pianists of Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami. “Whenever I hear Monk’s angular sound – it’s like sculpting ice from a precise angle, I think ‘this is jazz’ and feel encouraged,” he once wrote. Thelonious hit the keys with force, giving his music a percussive and bold tone. His composition is best known for its “dissonance chords”, which defy musical theories of harmony but sound so much fun. No wonder Murakami calls Thelonious an enigma!
