The world of classical music, in all its expansive history and immeasurable beauty, can be overwhelming for people who are new to this fascinating world. In this concert, Music Director Emeritus Yip Wing-sie will guide you through how to appreciate classical music, starting from an in-depth introduction of all the instruments in a symphony orchestra, with a video camera showing you close-up how the instruments are set up and played. By the end of the concert, you will learn to recognise the instruments and understand how they combine with each other to achieve different effects and convey emotions, in a selection of excerpts from well-loved orchestral works including Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture, Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, Britten’s The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra etc.
