Getting to Noh
An International Arts Collaboration Project by Oshima Noh Theatre (Japan) & Theatre Nohgaku (USA)
A cross-cultural and creative activity for families
Noh is one of the oldest theatre forms in the world. It dates back more than 700 years and is a UNESCO World Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This fascinating classical Japanese performance art combines dance, drama, music and poetry. With its elaborate costumes and beautiful masks through which emotions and tension are expressed, noh is well-known internationally and is attractive and inspiring to children. In the following workshops conducted by members of the renowned Oshima Noh Theatre and Theatre Nohgaku, participants can learn more about this engaging dramatic form. Besides, the theatres will bring an acclaimed new joint production of classical "Takasago" and contemporary noh theatre "Pagoda" to Hong Kong on 6 July 2011 at 7:45pm at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, during their forthcoming Asia Tour.
Mask-making Workshop
The mask-making techniques have been passed down for generations, therefore it is a unique experience for participants to see master mask-maker Hideta Kitazawa creating a noh mask in this workshop, explaining the process and the characters the masks portray. Master Kitazawa has conducted many workshops with families in the UK, the USA and other countries, and enjoys sharing his love of mask-making through discussion and questions as he demonstrates this beautiful art.
Art Workshop
Noh requires a special setting, including a Shinto-style roof and four pillars. There is usually a pine tree painted on the backdrop. This workshop enables children to discover more about this characteristic backdrop and how it is produced. In addition, beautiful fans are often used in noh. Children will learn to paint their own pine tree in classical style onto fans. A wonderful opportunity for youngsters to be creative!
