Thunderstorm is regarded as one of the four masterpieces
of Cao Yu, "the Chinese Shakespeare". The story is set in
1920s China and revolves around eight family members of
two generations whose complicated lives and intertwined
destinies change forever in the space of one day. The
powerful tale of love and betrayal takes many shocking
turns before reaching its tragic climax.
Through its ingenious plot, refined language and detailed
characterisation, Thunderstorm uncovers the dark aspects
of traditional society and is regarded as a Chinese theatre
classic. In this production, director David Jiang, Dean of
Drama at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts,
and his students provide a contemporary interpretation of
Thunderstorm, introducing the compelling work to a new
generation of theatre-goers.
