| "... a sumptuous visual feast woven around the ancient Chinese fairytale." - South China Morning Post The Emperor and the Nightingale bang the drum in fairytale dance to celebrate Andersen's
200th birthday
The universal choreographer Domy Reiter-Soffer's fairytale ballet The Emperor & the Nightingale danced to Richard Tsang's original score with live percussion.
The Emperor hears the nightingale's song and is enchanted, ordering it to be brought to him. But then the Japanese Ambassador presents the Emperor with a mechanical nightingale, encrusted with jewels and his liking for the real bird diminishes, which dejectedly flies back to the forest.
But however nice the mechanical bird looks, it eventually breaks down! Without it the Emperor not only falls ill, but realises the true loss of the real nightingale. Thankfully the nightingale returns, the Emperor recovers.
